Book of Lies

A truth, a lie to live, or die... Book of Lies follows Quinn and Piper, identical twin sisters who have never met but, due to the death of their mother, they are thrust together. However, one of the twins is filled with a darkness that will supposedly be the undoing of the other... As the story unfolds Quinn starts to realize that Piper, her sister, is not all she pretends to be, she is used to getting her own way and acts very spoilt; but Quinn also has secrets and fears of her own. I very much preferred Quinn to Piper as I found her to be more genuine and honest. As always with Teri's books, her characters are so believable and beguiling, dragging you into the story and compelling you want to find out absolutely everything you can about them. There were some scenes of violence and the twins' back story is actually built upon revenge and witchcraft but it is done very subtly, making the book quite dark and sinister in places but also exciting and dramatic. I really liked Book of Lies, it is such a great, mysterious and magical story. I didn't want to put it down. Quinn and Piper's stories were so different but so addictive. I wanted the story to last a little longer, which could have been done if some of the other characters had been developed, for example gran, and I would have loved to have learned more about her powers as we only had a glimpse of them, and her dealings with the Wisht Hounds and the Hunt. Perhaps then the book could have become a duology instead of a stand alone. I'd recommend this to 12+ readers, both emerging and confident readers, as the chapters are easy as they flit between the two sisters. The paperback copy has 428 - in my opinion - well written pages. A must-read book for readers that like supernatural stories and who are fans of the author. 428 pages / Ages 12+ / Reviewed by Linda Brown, school librarian.
