Summer Reading Challenge

27th Apr 19

This year's Summer Reading Challenge, Space Chase, will launch in local libraries on 22nd June in Scotland and 13th July in England and Wales and some 700,000 children are expected to take part.

The annual Summer Reading Challenge aims to support children's reading skills during the summer months, when they can often drop.

This year's Space Chase theme is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. For the challenge, children aged four to 11 years are encouraged to read up to six library books. to

As they read library books, they will solve clues and collect special stickers to complete their mission folder - to help the super space family 'The Rockets' track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! Can they find the aliens in time to save the day?

Children can read whatever they like: fact, fiction, joke books or poetry, from our excellent range. They can also borrow audio books and listen if they prefer.

Children's reading ability can 'dip' during the long summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure and this can be a problem for schools to put right in the new term. Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge helps children to become more fluent, confident and happy readers.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a national promotion produced by The Reading Agency and is delivered by libraries.
