An excellent read. It's an alternative view of Dickens' Christmas Carol, seen through the eyes of two waifs, a brother and a sister. The brother is a cynic, hardened by life, whereas his sister hasn't lost her kindness but depends on her brother to look after her. The story follows them through their experience of Christmas Eve and the spirits. This book is short enough so it keeps its pace, and I think is suitable for 10 year olds plus. The reason why I have given this 4/5 is that the ending was too sweet for me, rather like an over the top Oliver Twist. 270 pages / Ages 10+ / Reviewed by Paula Hazlehurst, librarian.
