Lottie Pumpkin and Ellie Wolf are as different as it's possible to be. Naive Lottie dreams of being a princess and having a handsome prince sweep her off her feet. Sassy Ellie is an uncompromising risk-taker, desperate to be free of the suffocating shackles of her family and her royal upbringing. Thrown together as roommates at the mysterious Rosewood School, they form an unlikely friendship and enter into a secret pact. Under the protection her Partizan, Jamie, Ellie takes Lottie to her homeland where dangerous games and a case of mistaken identity threaten the lives of all those involved. The front cover might look a little twee but readers should not be fooled; although there are hints of fairytale magic at Rosewood Hall, this story is about a very modern princess. The boarding school setting should have wide appeal and there are lots of curious characters and odd behaviours that keep the reader guessing. With hints of a covert organisation, the secrets of Rosewood barely touched upon and possibly a budding romance, the book is nicely set-up for a sequel. However, this is very much a complete story and with scene-setting established in the first half of the book, the second half races to an exciting and unexpected ending. This is a sparky, modern princess story, perfect for younger teens. 375 pages / Ages 11+ / Reviewed by Clare Wilkins, school librarian
