Write a Letter from Lockdown

11th May 20

Top authors are writing letters to children during lock down - a project set up by The Children's Bookshow - and encouraging them to write their own 'lockdown letters'.

At this time of year, The Children's Bookshow is usually preparing for its autumn programme of theatre performances and in-school workshops, but the current crisis has forced the organisation to postpone its programme until 2021.

As a result, thousands of children who would normally make up the audiences across the country will be missing out on having the chance to be inspired by seeing an author, illustrator or poet in action.

One of the ways the team at the Children's Bookshow thought they could help to fill this gap is to introduce the children to authors/illustrators through a handwritten / illustrated letter to inspire them to write their own lockdown letters. Perhaps they could write to a much missed friend, relative or an isolated neighbour, which they can then post or deliver by hand?

The first letter from Hilary McKay (winner of the Costa Children's Book Award 2018) has just gone live - see link, below.

Each week day for the next month a new letter will be posted. Letters have already been received from authors including Rachel Rooney, Satoshi Kitamura,
Viviane Schwarz, Daniel Morden, Jessica Souhami and Jon Agee. You can also download a letter from Alexis Deacon (as Beegu) via the PDF link, below.

More letters are on their way from authors includng Quentin Blake, Catherine Rayner, Benji Davies, David Litchfield and Valerie Bloom.

Children (via their parents, carers or teachers) can respond to the letters on twitter and facebook by tagging @ChildrensBkShow or sending an email to

thechildrensbookshow@gmail.com
