Barnes Children's Literature Festival goes virtual

4th Jun 20

Enjoy a host of free author events as the Barnes Children's Literature Festival goes online, Tuesday 9th to Sunday 14th June, including authors Cressida Cowell, Lauren Child, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Chris Riddell and Axel Scheffler.

There will also be special events:

- Andy Griffiths, author of the bestselling Treehouse Series will be doing a LIVE FROM AUSTRALIA event on Saturday June 13th
- Stanley Tucci will be reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea in celebration of Judith Kerr's birthday on Sunday 14 June. The late Judith Kerr was a local and beloved resident of Barnes.

They will be joined by a few famous faces including the Paralympian and television presenter, Ade Adepitan, and historian Dr Lucy Worsley. The Harry Potter playwright, Jack Thorne, who also adapted Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy for the BBC, will make his first literature festival appearance.

Barnes is also home to the UK's largest free literature festival schools programme and the Festival will open as planned on Tuesday 9th June 2020, with its Primary Schools Programme; four days of specially curated, curriculum linked sessions, now available online for those teaching in school and at home. Those taking part include: the king of comedy Jeremy Strong; the Blue Peter Book of the Year winner, SF Said; multi-award-winning authors Emma Carroll, Lisa Thompson and Lucy Strange; Children's Poetry Prize winner Joseph Coelho; and the bestselling picture book pair Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.

Among the highlights will be a magical new storytelling show from Danyah Miller (Michael Morpurgo's I Believe In Unicorns) starring 'the strongest girl in the world' Pippi Longstocking, celebrating the 75th anniversary of Swedish author Astrid Lindgren's most famous creation.

Barnes is the only top tier literature festival that is completely organised and delivered by more than 130 volunteers from every major Barnes school, charity and community organisation and book fans from all over London.
