In the kingdom of Frostopia, mermaids Beattie, Mimi and Zelda have come to the aid of Maritza Mist, a famous water witch who supplies magic spells to the underwater kingdoms. Two notoriously bad mermaids have escaped from Viper View prison and stolen Maritza's map that shows the locations of twelve magical objects. When brought together, these objects will create the most powerful water witch the world has ever known. Beattie, Mimi and Zelda set off to travel the underwater kingdoms to stop them. But they haven't counted on meeting a bunch of over-zealous spies, the oldest shark in the world or their faithful companion Steve the seahorse going rogue ... On Thin Ice is the third book in the hilarious Bad Mermaids series from the superbly witty and creative Sibeal Pounder, author of Witch Wars and a World Book Day author for 2019.

Review

Bad Mermaids on Thin Ice is the third book in this creative and inventive series by Witch Wars creator Sibeal Pounder. The series is full of action, funny moments and is brilliantly illustrated by Jason Cockcroft! This story takes us to the kingdom of Frostopia (each book features a different 'mermaid kingdom'), where mermaids Beattie, Mimi and Zelda have come to find Maritza Mist, a famous water witch who supplies magic spells to the underwater kingdoms. Recently her spells haven't been arriving, and the friends suspect foul play...

In a separate twist, two really bad mermaids have escaped from Viper View prison and are on the hunt for 12 magical ice objects that will increase their power so that one of them becomes the most powerful water witch ever. Beattie, Mimi and Zelda arrive at Maritza Mist's shop just in time to be caught up in this new adventure - can they stop the bad mermaids in their quest for power? Will a new friendship with a mermaid spy help or hinder them? And where is Steve the talking seahorse off to...?

It was fabulous to meet these characters again in a new adventure - and to explore a new part of the Bad Mermaids world. There are lots of twists and turns, and a wide range of characters, so if children haven't come across these books before, I'd recommend starting with book 1 though otherwise the number of characters and settings could get confusing...but for mermaid / Witch Wars fans, these are a definite 'go to'!

As well as the adventure itself, these stories explore themes around friendship, being brave and being oneself.
