Librarian's Book choice

Having read M. G. Leonard's Beetle trilogy, I knew that there was a very good chance that I would thoroughly enjoy this book and I was not disappointed, one bit. The Highland Falcon Thief, a debut collaborative adventure by M. G. Leonard and Sam Sedgeman, is a definite hit. First Class service from cover to cover!

The story starts when Harrison 'Hal' Beck reluctantly joins his journalist uncle on the final journey of the royal steam-train: The Highland Falcon. Hal is certain his time aboard the steam train is going to be a very dull few days but instead it turns out to be an incredible adventure. Teaming up with Lenny, the train engineer's daughter who has stowed away on the train, Harrison and Lenny find themselves investigating the mystery of missing Atlas diamond.

The Highland Falcon Thief would make a fantastic independent read for KS2 age children, but would also make a great class story for children of all ages. The plot holds the reader's attention with plenty of exciting exploits, while the detailed description of the train allows you to follow the two main characters as they solve the mystery of the missing jewels. How could any young reader not be impressed with a young boy who, in true 007 style, scrambles along the roof of a moving steam train in his efforts to solve the crime?

An absolutely fantastic read, set on a beautiful old train; great characters, excellent plot and just enough mystery to keep you guessing all the way to the end. I, for one, will be looking forward to the next exciting adventure on a train.

Review

I thoroughly enjoyed going on a fact-finding adventure aboard The Highway Falcon, a locomotive on its final voyage. Hal, who reluctantly joins his travel-writer uncle, finds more than he anticipated when he is thrown into the role of unveiling a jewel thief. Brimming with twists and turns, this engaging book will entice and captivate all.

I especially loved learning how a locomotive operates through the narrative of two children and feel this is a great way to increase children's general knowledge of times gone by.

I would recommend this book to adventure and detective lovers: reveal clues as you read to help you unscramble the mystery but will you solve it before they reach the end of the line?
