Amy Roecastle is beautiful. Selfish. And missing. Vanished without a trace in the middle of the night, she's taken her ferocious dog - and something else, too. Something deadly. Amy's best friend is lying to Inspector Singh, who has no leads and no idea. Cue Garvie Smith. Teenage slacker. Undeniable crime-solving genius. Garvie's one step ahead of the investigation. But there's nothing simple where Amy is involved. And this time Garvie's about to find himself in way over his head.

Librarian's Book choice

Another fabulous Garvie Smith book from Simon Mason. This story finds the teenage slacker now working for his mates brother fencing. When their client's daughter goes missing, Garvie finds himself in the midst of another mystery which he finds himself compelled to solve.

Once again, he finds himself one step ahead of the police investigation and his relationship with Detective Singh develops further in this book as the two of them work together to solve the complicated twists and turns the story takes us on.

It was great to see Garvie's character develop in this book, the realities of working for a living and his mother's new found social life have put him off kilter a little, although it never takes Garvie long to get back on top!

This is a fantastic trilogy of books that really revitalises the mystery/detective fiction genre for young people. I would highly recommend these books to children over the age of 14. It would also be really interesting to encourage them to read some of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories to compare and contrast.
