The Mouse Who Reached the Sky is a simple, yet utterly charming story that celebrates working together, friendship and sharing. One day, Little Mouse spots something red and shiny hanging in the branches of a tree. He thinks it is a beautiful marble and would like to have it. Despite his best efforts, Little Mouse just can not reach the marble so he decides to ask for help from his friend Mole. If they can get the marble out of the tree, they can play with it together. When Mole sees the red, shiny thing he thinks it is a balloon but even though he tries and tries, he just can't reach it, so the friends ask Rabbit for help. Rabbit thinks that the red, shiny thing is a ball that they can play catch with and is happy to help but even when he hops as high as he can, he still can't reach it. The friends need someone even taller than rabbit, but who? They soon realise that if they all work together they can reach the red, shiny thing and soon they discover what it really is. It is not a marble, or a balloon, or a ball, but instead a rather delicious surprise that they can all share. This delightful story is accompanied by bold illustrations that are sure to delight young children. It also has a fantastic fold out page towards the end showing the friends final plan to reach the mysterious red object that is stuck in the tree. This is such a fun story to share and would work well with both individual children as well as a whole class. The messages of friendship, sharing and working together are clearly presented for discussion but the story also encourages children to use their imaginations and think through the friends' problem. What do they think the red, shiny object could be? How could the friends get it out of the tree? Picture Book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by Torie Walton, teacher
